San Francisco Day 2 (aka No, I do NOT work here.)

So our second day started out kind of early. Before I get too into this blog I should mention that my mom, niece and her friend are all very obviously white. I look like the the ugly Dachshund when I was with them. XD Doesn't seem to matter now, but it will later on. Ok, now time for the blog! My mom, being the teacher always interested in everything, wanted to go to the Exploritorium. I hung out with my mom and my niece went off with her friend. They have a new section about the mind, puzzles, games, those genius tests (which were more on the can you spot the obvious test) and a few fun things mixed in. Not really my sort of thing, but it was ok. A museum or anything like that is more of my cup of tea. There is a reason why my mom has a masters in History, Math, Science and English. XD

After the Exploritorium we went to Chinatown. When we arrived at the Exploritorium it was misty. When we got out it was drizzling and by the time we started to make our way to Chinatown it started to rain very steady. Chinatown is in the most hilly, steep part of San Francisco. Yeah, when you come from driving in pretty much "flat" land and took everything told to you by your driving instructor literally it was odd to go into a "world" where going past the first line of a crosswalk was ok. It took me a long time before I started to get into a more crowded area where I saw cars doing just that. Boy did driving that section become easier. It would have been nicer to have been in my husband's Mazda 3 since it has more power, but oh well.

We finally reached Chinatown and it reminded me of what you see on the Travel channel for places like Hong Kong. No one really followed road rules. The sidewalks were crowded and even more cramped because almost every store flowed out onto the side walk. It just looked...dirty. It felt chaotic and we got lost twice since everything looked so similar. We went into a couple of shops. One of them was a very nice tea shop. If I had known that the teas around here were such crap then what I got in the restaurants there I would have bought some. XD

One of the stores was an underground clothing store. I liked a lot of the clothes, but I wasn't willing to spend that much on an outfit I couldn't wear at work. My niece's friend had 20 bucks to spend. There weren't any prices on most of the clothes in the store so it was more of try it on and if you like it then get the price. Personally I would have gone the other way around, but she shops differently. Window shopping first and then see if she can actually afford it. There were two dressing rooms and one was already taken by a pretty woman trying on pretty long dresses. Her poor husband just stood there holding her purse (the dressing rooms were small) and giving his opinion and asked. He looked very very bored. XD There was only one sales woman and she's helping both my niece's friend and also the woman. My niece's friend was planning on getting a two piece set. Her top was smaller then her bottom though so it was hard and taking a long time in trying to figure out what was her size.

I was paying more attention to the other woman though. Her husband had disappeared and she was trying on dress number 3, while I was there at least. The sales woman was trying to convince her to buy this pretty gold and brown dress. The dress was pretty, but it brought out the yellow in her skin and didn't flatter the woman. When the sales woman walked away to find a larger bottom for my niece's friend I politely whispered to the woman that she looked better in the other dresses. Normally I would have kept my mouth shut, but the woman had mentioned it was for her son's wedding so I had to speak up. I could tell by her behavior that she was going to by the yellow dress, that sales woman was very good at her job. XD She asked which color I liked the best on her. I told her that the blue print of the blue and pink dress were prettier and the blue color looked the best. She told me it was for her son's wedding and explained that she would wear a dress like she was picking out first and then at the reception she would change into a more glamorous dress. I asked when it was and she said in the summer so I suggest the blue since blue is a great summer color, and pink feels more like a pring color since I tend to collect it with Sakura trees which bloom in the spring. She agreed.

The sales woman came back and asked if she wanted the gold dress and was told no. She didn't look very happy. The woman then looked at the rack of dresses next to her dressing room and saw a purple one. She asked if she could try it on. (While she was trying it on my mom asked me what I thought of her outfit and I said it looked more like PJs.) She tried it on and then opened the curtain to see what I thought. She looked really good. Purple was definitely a very good color for her. It would also fit well with a summer wedding. That's when it happened... She closed the curtain, took it off handed it to me on the hanger and asked, "It was a bit too big. Can I please try it on in a medium?" I was stunned, shocked and amazed. I didn't want to embarrass the nice woman so I smiled as sweetly as I could and said, "I'm sorry, but I don't work here. I'll go see if I can find the sales woman." The woman started to giggle a little, blushed and said she was sorry, she just thought since I was next to the dressing rooms that I was there to help. The sales woman's ears must have been ringing since she came within a few seconds and helped the woman. I then quickly left to stand with my mom who was trying on jackets and asked for my opinion.

Oh, that's not all... So my niece's friend thought my mom was going to chip in the other 15 bucks for the difference on the outfit. I guess because my mom said that's a decent price. My mom was trying to teach her that she could only get what you can afford so had no plans to do that. Then it happened. My mom tried on all of the styles and didn't really love any of them enough to pay the price she was asking for. When the sales woman found out that we weren't going to buy anything she started to yell at us to get out of her store and to never come back. Then she started to yell at us in Chinese (not sure which one) and I'm not sure what she said, but I'm guessing I don't want to either. XD

We also went to a posh Italian restaurant who was too good for Italian sodas, too pedestrian I guess, and the waiter was just very snobish. We dressed in normal clothes, it was connected to a Best Western Express so we didn't think it would be something we'd need to dress up for. In fact, except for a few couples no one did dress up. When my mom and I decided to get the soup we asked if it was good. I guess that's a stupid question because that's how he acted. "It's like a cream of mushroom soup, but it's not prepared like one." Oh yeah that tells me if it's good or not. We ordered it anyways and it was very very good. My mom and I couldn't decide between two different dinners so we each ordered one and both were very good. I never knew Thumper could taste so yummy. XD Now for all of you PITA members just back off. It's all about the food chain and I don't see you guys crying when the one eating the rabbit is another animal.

When I tried to order the Italian soda towards the end of the dinner I was told "they don't have THOSE". I then asked if they had a full bar. He said yes so I asked what kind of sweet flavored liquor they had. He gave me a puzzled look and asked what I meant since didn't I ask for an Italian soda. I felt like screaming. I then explained that yes I did want one, but since they didn't have Italian Sodas I needed to think outside the box so that means finding out what kind of sweet flavored liquors they had, berries preferred. He told me they had a blackberry liquor that was popular to drink by itself by woman. I then asked for Sparkling water (every posh bar as sparkling water) and that mixed well. It was brought and tasted exactly how an italian soda would...imagine that. Normally I'd ask for sweet liquor and a zima, but I didn't want to get that "oh a poor person" look with that "you don't belong here" tone in his answer. XD

Sigh.. You know sometimes, I don't like being around other Chinese because it's an embarrassment!! I mean, why can't someone try something and everything and decide not to buy? I mean, maybe it looked good but doesnt look good on her? I never really worked as a clothes sales person before but I've been shopping a lot to know that. You should smile politely even though you feel like choking the poor person and say "thank you" and finish it with "for bringing my hopes up" in your brain.

Anyway, I hate it when you go to a posh place and then the waiter treats you like rubbish just because you don't look posh enough or eat posh enough. Hey we're still paying you tips!

Okay.. I think my brain just went into overdrive. I better stop...

i used to be influenced by my mum's conservative thinking that we have to be 'the same level as rich people' to go into posh restaurants or to some other places for the posh...

but now i don't give a damn whether i'm penniless or dress shabbily i just walk into those posh areas. and for restaurants ... i don't really care how i dress as long i have money to pay ... and sometimes they give me poor service... i have this tendency of 'barking' madly until they can give me free meal or something for free... hahahah... i'm crazy.

Yes it's the one of leo and claire, I found it boring because it was draggy, they pull out their guns and started talking... =_=" I don't mind that they just update the time, at least it's better than going back in time, I think.

Aha! Picking up hitch hikers are much more dangerous.. XD

Thanks for offering again, I can get all 8 seasons off this internal hub in the hostel, I just can't get Gossip Girl yet because it is not in that internal hub so I got to get it off the net. I got bored of it after the season Chris was in because I can sort of predict that's going to happen. The season Billy was in was the last season wasn't it?

i think chinatown everywhere tends to be dirty... @_@;; i used to live near chinatown in toronto... =X it was very clean back in the day... =(

anyways... i can understand the sales lady's reaction but she shouldn't scream out loud at you guys... i work at a shoe store... sometimes we get customers that stay there for an hour trying more than 20 pairs of shoes and not buying anything... @_@;; i also work at a custom tee shop and a person spent over 1 hour making me design the shirt and end up not getting it done... =__=;; it's a pain to handle some customers but we still need to smile at them... =(

i thought at chinatown you can try to haggle the price down... =X you can try.. XD

i haven't listened to recent korean songs... i'll post some more songs on my blog later on... =)
