The importance of your name.
The more I think about it the more I feel that Japan and other cultures that put more importance in people's names and use honorifics have it right. We give out our first name as if it's nothing to anyone. It holds no real importance and is treated as if it's just something to call you then "hey you".
We have no honorifics to give to people besides Mr., Mrs. Ms. and Miss. How often do YOU use them? We have nothing to show who you respect, like, or how close you are to someone. You have no idea how close others feel you are to them and visa versa. When you're introduced to John Doe, do you call him John or Mr. Doe? I know I've never called any of my boss' Mr. before, even in the interview.
How close does your friend really think you two are? Are you close and intimate enough to be in a first name basis if he or she had a choice? Would you let X person call you by your first name if you had a choice? I know many people I would have stop calling me by my first name.
Our new receptionist came the other day. I'll post more on her sometime this weekend.
Well... I use Mr./Mrs./Ms. with adults. Friends' parents, strangers--once Katie's mom 'n dad told me to call them by their first names, but I didn't. I just couldn't, I was comfortable doing so. =P Unless I know them very well. Like those in my dance school. ^-^

I use them quite often though usually I substitute it with Uncle/Aunty for most of them are quite old. Though I'm not sure what my friends would call me if they're given a choice.

true...
there are so many people i wouldnt call by their first names. especially in school and any other social group i might have joined, and there are so many i wouldnt let call me by my first name if i'd had a choice... but i personally dont really like my last name ^^;;
ehh... Katrina-nee... i dnt think i'd lose feelings so easily for a 'potential love of my life' x_x;;
i'm the type who can fall in love easily, but can also fall out of love easily ;_; i havent really been able to change that about me x_x;; i might have done at one point, but it just hurt me a lot... so i gave up... ugh. i dont know why i do it, or maybe feelings just can't be controlled... but... i dnt know... ;_; wuuuu TT_TT
